Draw and cut out and decorate a largish fish for each contestant, then when everyone is happy with their fish. All stand in a line with a magazine or book or a fan that they have also made, then proceed to make as much breeze as possible behind the fish to make it move until you get to the finish line. The winning fish wins a prize.
PLAY DOUGH (though we wouldn't advsie eating it but if you really want to it's harmless*)
This is really simple
Shove some plain flour, salt and water in a bowl food colouring if you like and even some smelly essence.
mix together until it forms a consistency you are happy with.
You can even go as far as baking it until it is solid let it cool and paint it. Easy as pie.
Exploding bags. Baking soda and vinegar when put together have always made a lovely fizz. Add some food colouring and let your little one play at being a scientist. Or this is great go one step futher and go for expoding bags they are great though better outside. Tear a paper towel into a square that measures about 5 inches by 5 inches. Put 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda in the center of the square, then fold the sides of the square in toward the middle, and then the opposite sides in toward the middle, with the baking soda inside. This is your "time-release packet." Pour into your plastic zip lock bag, 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup of warm water. You need to drop the time-release packet into the vinegar and zip the bag closed before the fizzing gets out of control.Shake the bag a little, put it in the sink or on the ground, and stand back! The bag will puff up dramatically and then give a satisfying pop sound.
Fill the bath or a large tub with some water and collect a variety of objects around the house. Ask your child to guess whether the object will float or sink, then test them out! More than one child can be a competition.
You could always
Whack on the wellies &
go puddle jumping
You can be as simple or as in depth as you like with this on, the indepth version hide items round the house draw a map and hide clues with the odd sweet attached round the house, leading to the final treasure, sweets, little toys what ever you want.
Or simply hide an item round the house and run round with them while they find it. other variations are saying hot or cold when they are near the treaure/hidden item.
This is always a winner even on non rainy days let them loose on ur old clothes and send them off to the land of make believe.
If your children are a little older then why not (with supervison) let them cut up and sow together some of yours and their old clothes to make a one off bespoke creation then have a fashion show. Though I would supervise them when they are picking the items to cut up, you don't want your fav top suddenly becoming a bikini.
No paper? why not let them paint garden pots, plant some seeds & watch them grow they make great personalised pressies.
Give yourself
permission
to relax &
enjoy your kids.
So what if the
house is a mess?
Make your own sensory bottles (older kids will like making em babies will love playing with em)
Fill some small pop/water bottles to different levels with rice, buttons, multi-coloured beads, small animals, foam shapes, coloured water, glitter water etc anything you can find in the house that makes a noise. Once filled glue the lids back onto the bottles and leave to dry, ensuring the lids are securely sealed before giving to the children.
Make the objects different sizes and colours so that when the children shake them they make a variety of different sights and sounds.
It always helps to keep a box of arty type stuff on top of the cupnoard. Glitter, buttons, paper paints etc you can pick up 1 item when you do your weekly shop, and you will soon have a kit to entertaing them for hours on a rainy day
But do it messily, spill the flower and let them put there fingers in it and swirl it round, let them melt the chocolate topping and spread it on fairy cakes are cheap and easy to make and can be chucked away if the are really awful but at least you had fun.
Get an old quilt or blanket, then get old babyvests, items of clothing that have fond memories that may not fit anymore old blankets and any other fabric item that holds memories but may have seen better days. Supervise the kids while they cut them into largish similar sized squares. (about the size of half an a5 sheet) then once they have quite a few. Star sowing them all onto the quilt/blanket This may last over a few rainy days as it can be as big or as small as you want. However at the end you will have a gorgeous keepsake of your childs younger days that either yourself or they can keep and have with them forever.
You will need – 1 ball or small beanbag
Players stand in a circle with their arms crossed. One person in the centre throws the ball/beanbag to someone in the circle, saying either ‘Catch’ or ‘Don’t catch’.
If they say ‘Catch’, the player should not catch the ball and must not move their arms. If they say ‘Don’t catch’, the player should catch the ball.
Get kids to decorate a piece of coloured paper each, then fold it into a origami plane. See who’s plane can fly the furthest. The kids will get excited and burn off some energy.
Go through your old photo albums and show your kids pictures of them when they were babies. Your kids will love pointing out people that they know. Then arrange them in a frame you can buy them pretty cheaply at wilko, the pound shop or poundstretcher. For older kids put a pic of them in the middle and build their family tree round it. It is creative and will keep them entertained for hours.
Using elastic, tie small soft toys to the top of your baby's high-chair. Show them how you drop the toys and pull them back up again.
